Dear Reader,
This quarter we are continuing our discussion of what makes up America’s DNA. After a fun issue on food, let’s turn our attention to the array of languages that form the bedrock of American culture.
Yes, it’s hard to discuss language in America without taking a stand on whether the United States should have an official language. But’ that’s exactly what we are going to do. Reasonable people (even us!) disagree on whether there should be none, one, or many official languages.
But this issue of the Think Table isn’t about politics, it’s about people.
Languages are about the ways that we have and still communicate with each other. The many languages we speak open us up to new perspectives, new ways of thinking. In this month’s Think Table, we dive into the hundreds of languages spoken in the United States and how those languages interact with English and American culture more broadly.
This issue of The Think Table was guest edited by Annie Kemmerer.
Hope you gain new insights,
Téa
